Playing with Play-doh

You may or may not know that baking is not my “thang”. There was an episode with a batch of chocolate chip cookies not too long ago that I chronicled on my other blog. My friend Stephanie got a good chuckle out of that and suggested that she could send her son over to help me make some. Well, it looks like I may need to ask if he knows how to make a yellow cake. No not the same yellow cake that Mos Def talked about in Dave Chapelle’s hilarious skit, “Black Bush”. Regular old yellow cake. See, yesterday at the store Ryan asked to buy some Twinkies and, since we’re living a new lifestyle without the chemical-laden foods we used to eat, I said no. But I did offer to make some of our own. Eventually the kid’s going to catch on that baking and I are not friends but, for now, he said that was fine.

I made a yellow cake tonight and it did not turn out well. I made it from scratch and it looked so good going into the pan that it just seemed like this time things would be different. My cake would win me the accolades of friends and family and most importantly, Ryan. It smelled incredible. When the timer went off, Ryan and I both ran into the kitchen to take the cake out of the oven because the smell coming out of that kitchen let us know that we had hit the homemade twinkie jackpot. THe cake came out of the oven looking perfect. Light, golden yellow. Gorgeous! We grabbed a knife to cut off a tiny piece and were met with s-l-i-g-h-t resistance when the blade met the golden cake. It didn’t want to cut it. The cake was very springy. Well, I don’t know what caused it, obviously I did something wrong but it’s ok because Ryan found something else to do with it:

He grabbed some cookie cutters and began making things out of the cake. It proved to be quite difficult and he had to take drastic measures to get the job done.

Both kids got in on the act:

Eventually they tired of this game and looked for an easier thing to mold. Play-doh! Even Sean and I had a good time playing with it. Ryan made ketchup and I made french fries, Sean made a pizza, and Iain cut out animal shapes and told us a story.

It was a really nice way to spend the evening and it all started because I’m a terrible baker. Tomorrow, I’m going to get up early and give the yellow cake another shot because I found another recipe and this one doesn’t call for something as fancy as beating egg whites until they’re stiff. Hopefully, this one will turn out much better. I’ll be sure to let you know!

LOL..I love the picture of Ryan banging on the cookie cutter with the bottle of Modge Podge.

That is awesome that you were able to make light of the situation and have fun with your family.

It was funny! We all had a good time. I got up today and baked another cake and he said, “That one doesn’t look too yellow.” Meaning it doesn’t look like a twinkie so we’ll see what happens once I make the filling.

The cake this morning turned out SO much better than the one last night. I used a different recipe and it looks gorgeous. I’ll post pics once we get all the twinkie elements together.

    lol.
a cake that a cookie cutter cannot cut.
I didn’t know that was possible!
    🙂
In your defense, I”ve ever heard of a cake with beaten egg whites, so that was the problem, definitely.
Why would they say that, I wonder? In a cake???

    Laura,

I just finished wrapping up the final new version of the homemade twinkies and they are SO much better than what you see here. This cake reminded me of my low-carb days. It had that kind of taste. Yuck!

    Stephanie,

I believe a genoise uses egg whites and the same goes for flourless chocolate cakes. I think the difference is this particular recipe didn’t call for egg yolks to be added in later. That’s according to my mom anyway.

I did make a cake using a different recipe though and am getting ready to update in a minute!

He was misdiagnosed by the first vet we used here and that led to a situation where the treatment almost seemed worse than the disease. Thankfully, @lawndale_vet helped us navigate that situation and they have nursed this big boy back to a much happier place. We still are uncertain about how much time we have left with him but, for now, he is the happiest we have seen him in a long time. I am so thankful to the staff at Lawndale for, not only providing great medical care, but for loving on him and making him feel like the best boy ever at each appointment. ❤️❤️❤️

We got the first one healed and then he got one on his other paw. Then that one got better but his paw pads got rubbed raw by the protective boot he was in and now are infected. Fingers crossed that this cone helps keep him from licking it so he can heal. Until then, Bowie is going to be a very sad boy, indeed. 😢
