This is the front of my dishwasher. For about the last week or so, the boys have really been into using these magnet letters to spell words and put them on the dishwasher. What started this recent attraction to spelling? No idea. Ryan actually started doing it first then Iain got in on the act. What’s cool is Ryan is using words like upper case and lower case when he talks about a letter. It’s awesome! I need to get more letters because there are only one of each so it’s hard when they both want to spell with them. Believe it or not, it’s hard to find these letters! I’m going to have to try a local educational supply store next because our local Target and Wally World didn’t have any. Oh! Last night, we were at Target and lately, since Ryan is all about spelling, he looked at the sign and told us how to spell target. He started laughing and said, “What if it were called Targ?” He’s 5 people, it’s funny to him. To which I responded, “How would you spell Targ?”
“T-A-R-G”
Damn, how’d he know that? Don’t know, don’t care. I just love it.

Hey.
Do you have any dollar stores? Or is that a thing only rampant in my state? 🙂
Try those places in the wooden spoons section – they’ll be $1, of course. We’ve had like 5 or 6 sets so far.
Prob’ly I should clean under the fridge….

doh! I haven’t looked there and there are at least three in very close proximity to me! Thanks for the tip. I’ll check there tomorrow!
It’s perfect for my budget too.

Damn it, Evie, I’ve written out a big long mushy comment TWICE!, and lost it both times.
The gist – how the heck to you spell gist?- of it was I read your whole blog, and am so in awe of the beautiful and wondrous way your family demonstrates the magic of unschooling.
Your chidlren are so obviously very well educated, and brilliant.
Whenever I read of your doubts, I was like “What? What the heck is she talkin’ about?!?”
Your children’s sparkliness is apparent for all to see! (my daughter is right this moment taking a sip from one glass and spitting it in another, speaking of obvious intelligence. I roll my eyes. :))
Anyway, they seem brilliant to me, and you tell your stories so well.
(sorry to give you the third and cheap version.)
Sending love,
Steph

Steph,
Wow! What an incredibly sweet thing to say! It really touched my heart and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.
You know yourself how hard this lifestyle can be, especially when trying to explain it to others, or when family members aren’t understanding what it is we’re doing (or undoing as the case may be). That’s why your comments mean so much to me. You KNOW what I’m talking about. You made me laugh out loud when you mentioned your daughter spitting water from one glass to another because at that moment, my boys were rolling around on the floor in their underwear, like a couple of midget sumo wrestlers. Not a traditional school day to be sure!
It’s nice to feel a connection to someone else who seems to share a lot of the same interests and I’m so glad you come here and post your comments. As much as you enjoy my blog, I enjoy yours too and find yours to be written much more eloquently than mine. I would compare them this way- my style is short and sweet, like Hemingway (nowhere near as good as his though !) and you are poetic like Lord Byron. It’s nice to escape my matter of fact life and enjoy the prose of your blog.
Geez, now I’m the one getting mushy. All that to say, thank you for being my blogger friend. It’s nice to know you! I know I’ve left out some other things I wanted to say but they escape me now.
Thank you again for your extraordinarily kind comment.
Evie
