i love rainy days

Whoa, it’s only Wednesday??

What a week it’s been thus far.  Yesterday was supposed to be a great fun day of visiting friends and instead turned out to be something much, much different.  We drove an hour and a half to Raleigh to visit my friend Marin and her son, Ian.  The boys were excited, I was excited, and we were ready to have fun!  After we got there, we’d been there about 15 minutes I guess, Iain and Ian went outside to play.  The next thing we know, Iain is crying like crazy and he runs in the house crying that he can’t see.  What??  Apparently, Iain has attempted to straighten a line, like a clothesline, in their backyard by propping a broomstick-type thing against it and climbing up the stick.  The stick rolled off the line and Iain crashed head-first into the ground.  He was freaking out, I was freaking out.  It was not a good scene.  Marin, bless her heart, was trying to make Iain comfortable but that just wasn’t happening so we decided to head out of there and call the doctor on the way back to Greensboro.

In the car, the nurse asked me some questions about Iain’s condition and, at that point, she said he should be ok but with a head injury it’s important to be watchful.  She also said he might throw up once but shouldn’t throw up more than that and to call immediately if that happens.  Well, we were almost all the way home when Iain threw up the first time.  He felt better right away so I thought we were out of the woods.  Unfortunately that was not the case.  Once we got inside, he started screaming that his head was hurting so bad and he felt sick again.  I called the doctor and they told us to come in right away.
Once we arrived, Iain went into the waiting area and was writhing in pain from the intense headache that he had.  He still felt nauseous, too.  We didn’t have to wait too long to get called back although it certainly felt like an eternity.  The doctor was awesome.  He wasn’t our regular doctor but he was fantastic with Iain.  So kind and comforting, and unbelievably gentle when Iain threw up in the room.  Love this doctor.  He checked Iain’s neurologic functions and his blood pressure and they were all good so he said to just go home, keep an eye on him, and let him sleep.  He gave me a list of things to watch for and said to call back if I had any concerns whatsoever.
We got home and Sean was there.  God, I was so glad he came home from work and it made Iain feel so special, too.  We spent the rest of the day tending to Iain, he threw up a total of 6 or 7 times.  Scary that a head injury can do that.  The doctor called around 7 to check on Iain and he said he felt like Iain was going to turn the corner and be feeling well very soon.  Sure enough, around 8:30pm, it was like a switch came on and Iain was feeling like his old self.  It was beautiful and weird at the same time!  We were SO relieved that he was going to be ok as it had been a harrowing afternoon.

Here is a photo of the patient, lying on the sofa, nibbling on a cracker with the barf bowl by his side.  By this time he was feeling much better.
I have to tell you, there was a lot of guilt in my heart yesterday.  I felt so bad that I hadn’t been outside with him because certainly had I seen him attempt to climb on that wooden stick, I would have stopped him from doing it.  He suffered a major injury because I was not there and that is a hard pill to swallow.  I know you can’t protect them from everything but in hindsight it seems like the prudent thing would have been to be outside with them.
Anyway, we still hope to be able to visit with our friends again.  I don’t think we’ll be traveling in the car anytime soon because Iain gets carsick and the doctor said that certainly didn’t help things.  Keep your fingers crossed that he doesn’t get airsick when we fly to Disneyworld in a couple of weeks!  Hopefully the rest of the week will go a little more smoothly than it has!
Be well everyone!
« Yep. It’s Monday all right.
Snow Day? Well, that’s what we call it here. »

Hey come on honey, don’t feel too guilty, thats a normal mom reaction, there are times when you are not/can’t be with them and they will still do something daft. I have 4 boys – 3 of them grown up and one of 13,and there isn’t enough paper in the world to tell you of the silly things they did and the injuries they caused themselves. Just found your blog and think it’s great.

Hey Rosie! Thanks for your comment. I know you’re right but I couldn’t help feeling a little bad about it. Heaven knows, my husband has told me enough things that I should be prepared for all the crazy things that boys do but yesterday all I could think about was my baby being hurt!! 🙂 I’m a lot calmer now.

I’m glad you like the blog! Please come back again!

I agree with Rosie. I understand why you feel guilty. I would too. But we really can’t protect them from everything. Glad he’s feeling better. Cute kid.

Thanks, Stacie! I think if the injury hadn’t been so serious I wouldn’t have felt so bad about it, you know.

He is a cutie! Thanks for saying that!

    Aack!
    What a nightmare!!
Is it the first major injury?
If it’s one every eight to fifty years…..
    🙂
    I”m sorry honey.
Try not to be mad at yourself. Or sad.
If you can forgive him for doing it (obviously) – then you should forgive yourself, too.

It’s the first one for Iain. Ryan has gotten bumps on his head more than I can count but never as bad as this. Ryan is a little sturdier than Iain is, too. 🙂

Thanks for the encouragement, Steph. Things are so much better today! Well, except for Ryan getting mad at Iain and throwing the metal Lincoln Logs container at his head. That wasn’t so good. lol

I’m just glad Iain’s back to his normal self.

So sorry, friend, that this happened yesterday! I am feeling really guilty that it happened at my house and in my backyard and that we weren’t there to prevent it.

I hope you are all feeling better today!

Don’t beat yourself up girl, I usually find that you get hit with a wave of grief / guilt / “what if” once the initial crisis is over.

It’ll be one of those “boy” moments Iain will be able to boast about in years to come!

    Hang in there,

Hey Marin! Now, don’t you feel guilty about a thing! All is well and you are in no way responsible for the crazy things that my kids do.

We’re all good here! Hope you are, too.

    Hey there, Cate!

I’m sure you’re right. It’ll be a bragging point for Iain sometime to be sure.

    Thanks both of you!

    Thanks Colleen and PG!!

He still has a sore head but other than that he’s great. I won’t try and front. I was really scared. If any of us have the good fortune to meet and hang out in person, just pray that nothing serious happens because I’m a mess in a crisis. He was much braver than me!

Thanks again to both of you!

OMG! I am so glad that Iain is okay. What a scary thing to go through.

I totally understand the guilt thing though. Chloe is my one child who is always getting hurt. She’s broken teeth and split her chin open and on and on and on. And usually I am not very far away. I’m just not looking at her at the moment. It takes me a while to get over it too.

I hope today goes much better for you guys.

We’re sitting here looking at the “snow” we got last night, which wasn’t much, but I think today will be much better!

We’ll be fine, then, if (WHEN) we get together. When MY kids get hurt, I flake too. When other kids get hurt, I’m cool as a cucumber. A perk from my teacher training days? If I flaked, who’d handle the crisis?

But when something’s wrong with my kids, my brain flies out the back of my head.

Hey gang! Thanks for your kindness! Iain’s doing much better although he has been suffering with the occasional headache. The doctor said that’s going to happen for the next several weeks.

Thanks so much for all the well-wishes!

He was misdiagnosed by the first vet we used here and that led to a situation where the treatment almost seemed worse than the disease. Thankfully, @lawndale_vet helped us navigate that situation and they have nursed this big boy back to a much happier place. We still are uncertain about how much time we have left with him but, for now, he is the happiest we have seen him in a long time. I am so thankful to the staff at Lawndale for, not only providing great medical care, but for loving on him and making him feel like the best boy ever at each appointment. ❤️❤️❤️

We got the first one healed and then he got one on his other paw. Then that one got better but his paw pads got rubbed raw by the protective boot he was in and now are infected. Fingers crossed that this cone helps keep him from licking it so he can heal. Until then, Bowie is going to be a very sad boy, indeed. 😢
