Counting by 12’s a.k.a. Doughnut Math

unschooling

Today we purchased our math curriculum. It’s quite effective. Today, we bought a dozen doughnuts. Yes, you read that right. Your eyes are not deceiving you. Our math curriculum is doughnuts oh, and doughnut holes. On the way home from the store, we began discussing how many doughnuts were in a dozen. That led to the number of doughnuts in two dozen, then three dozen and then, well, I think you get the point. As we sat in the car happily eating our way into a sugar coma, we were also figuring out some arithmetic. Ryan had chosen doughnut holes at the store and he said, “I think I have 60 dozen in here! How many pieces is that, Momma?” When I told him that equaled 720 pieces, both boys laughed uproariously and Ryan declared, “well, I don’t have THAT many but I do have a lot!” See? He’s able to estimate, too! 🙂

I know I’m a broken record but really, people. Learning happens all the time. Even if it’s just some flour, and yeast, smothered in a glaze of sugary goodness.

That’s the spirit! 🙂 Love that.
I haven’t had doughnuts in ages. Maybe I should do a little math lesson too…. any excuse for some sugary nothing sounds good to me.

Good method. I don’t understand my son’s math anymore. I had to hire a college math student to help him when he was having trouble. I felt pretty stupid.

We’ve used a lot of things for our math – Lego, plants in the garden, cookies, pizza but I don’t think we’ve ever done doughnuts. 😉 Fun post and yes it really does show that education is everywhere…especially when our eyes are open to it.

Do you know the Burl Ives song –

As you go through life make this your goal
Watch the donut, not the hole.

Doughnuts have many good life lessons for us. 🙂

I’d be willing to learn phlebotomy if it meant donuts. 🙂
